The deal between Microsoft and Yahoo! with regards to the firms' search engines could lead to a number of changes for search engine optimisation.
Currently, Yahoo! and Bing are the second and third largest search providers and the new deal is designed to give the firms more competition against market leader Google.
A number of figures within the online marketing industry are optimistic about the new deal, believing that renewed competition will help to improve the sector.
The SEOmoz blog suggested that even though Bing's market share is currently small, expending effort on search engine optimisation for the search provider is worthwhile, thanks to the difference in approach to keywords from Google.
Unlike Google, Bing does not focus on exact keyword matches, instead it picks up on any placement in the sub or root. Its results are richer than that of the other main search providers, the blog adds.
And as it returns the top five results for a number of queries, effective search engine optimisation may reap greater rewards here, the blog claims.
