The use of Web 2.0 keyword tagging can form part of an effective search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy, one industry expert suggests.
Writing in a PC Pro blog, Tom Arah states that while the unethical use of tagging had in the past seen the use of the keywords meta tag ignored or penalised by search engines, Web 2.0 tagging now means that "keywords are back with a vengeance".
Pointing out content management systems - for instance Wordpress and Joomla - and other Web 2.0 sites, such as Flickr, encourage all content uploaded to be tagged with keywords, Mr Arah states that as such tags now appear as links the credibility of such phrases will be boosted.
He also points out Web 2.0 tags can prove more effect than their meta tag predecessors due to the fact the former is "there openly on the page", meaning there is less need to load content with irrelevant keywords.
Continuing, Mr Arah claims Web 2.0 tagging does not only improve SEO rankings for individual pages but also helps search engines to understand the overall focus of a site.
And last month, Peter D explained in a SEO Book article that the use of web analytics tools - such as Google Trends - can help to recognise future keyword trends.
