Online marketing - which could include search engine optimisation, social media marketing and pay per click advertising - is set to grow by 10.1 per cent during 2009, new figures have revealed.
The research by ZenithOptimedia shows that this was more than was originally estimated, while the majority of this growth is expected to be as a result of paid searches.
However, this is the only growth that has been forecast within the global advertising market, with the sector as a whole expected to fall 8.5 per cent this year, revised from its original prediction of a decline of 6.9 per cent.
Commenting on its findings, the group stated: "The internet's familiar virtues of transparency, accountability and flexibility have proved even more attractive in a recession than ever."
However, online marketing could be given a further boost by taking recent advice from Computerworld's Bruce Russell.
He noted that a common factor among businesses which had succeeded in using the internet to grow was the user-centred design of their websites.
