The majority of internet users go online to socialise, according to new research, meaning that social media marketing may be a useful tool for businesses to promote themselves with.
Some 72 per cent of people go online in order to become part of a community, the Ruder Finn Intent Index has revealed.
Furthermore, 80 per cent of users use the internet as a way to socialise - more than double the number who use it to shop or do business.
As a result, the group stresses that firms which do not connect with users' intent to socialise, do so "at their own peril".
Kathy Bloomgarden, Ruder Finn co-chief executive officer, said: "Just being online is not enough to leverage digital channels to drive business imperatives. Audiences must be targeted based upon their intent."
Companies keen to focus on social media marketing may also be interested to hear that the BBC has launched Shownar - a BBC Vision tool which aims to track social media conversions.
