Identifying keyword trends for SEO success

Search engine optimisation (SEO) can have a "long lead time", according to one commentator, so it is worthwhile identifying possible keyword trends in order to better predict the future.
In a post for SEO Book, Peter D explains that spotting particular trends can give a better idea of how a niche is going to develop and that trends traditionally follow a "gradual, predictable pattern".
He notes that Google Trends is one web analytics tool which can be utilised to identify what particular trends are likely to develop and have an impact on search traffic in the future.
Likewise, Mr D recommends Twitter Search and Microsoft Ad Intelligence as tools to explore where niches will grow over time.
"Ideally, you want to find keyword areas that show an increasing level of interest, or areas where there is significant, steady interest over time," he adds.
Mr D suggests constructing a link building strategy around the terms which show a constant level of traffic, along with any identified emerging trends.
And SEOMoz's Sam Niccolls recently stated the importance of finding the highest volume of traffic to specific web pages before altering a website.
