Weeks after Microsoft launched its new search engine Bing, the tool is "showing promise", according to a new study.
The figures by Nielsen Online reveal that on June 1st Bing doubled the number of unique visitors that its previous incarnation Microsoft Live Search had seen the previous day and almost overtook Yahoo! for the number two search slot.
Over the week, Bing gained six per cent over where Live Search had been in its share of search pages - from 8.7 per cent to 14.7 per cent.
Nielsen's Jon Stewart said: "Bing's stagnation in daily visitors since its launch does make me wonder about the opportunity for significant growth in a mature search market with a well-established leader."
However, he added that it was still too soon to tell how significant the search engine's success would be.
Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan said Google is now "fighting back" by launching an Explore Google Search function.
