Keeping a distance between trust and spam

Website owners can find that the amount of trust search engines place in their sites is increased by putting as much space as possible between their content and known spam, one sector commentator has claimed.

Eric Enge, in a post for Search Engine Watch, said that in contrast the fewer clicks needed to go from a "highly trusted seed page" to the website owner's own content is also a good thing in developing trust with search engines.

However, he added that trust should also be seen as topic-specific.

"If a site is trusted by the search engines as a source of info on used cars, that doesn't mean that it will be trusted as a source of info on outdoor tool sheds," he explained.

Furthermore, the site may not be a trusted source for information on new car sales.

Mr Enge noted that to build trust with search engines takes time.

Mike McDonald, in a recent article for WebProNews, said search engines are constantly changing and it was up to the website owner to alter in order to meet these changes.
