Can PPC affect SEO?

One sector commentator has admitted that his past comments that pay per click (PPC) adverts cannot affect search engine optimisation (SEO) may have been wrong.

In a post for Search Engine Watch, Mark Jackson said his team had recently spotted occasions in one client account where backlink anchor text that was not being optimised against appeared to be "promotional in nature".

Following a review, it became apparent that these links were coming from PPC - advertisement titles from Overture/Yahoo! Search Marketing and Google AdWords - but that Google Webmaster Tools viewed them as anchor text of backlinks.

He explained that this method had previously been condoned by Google as it did not pass on link value.

"But it would seem that Google is indeed crawling through the redirection and passing the value of that text to the target URL," Mr Jackson concluded.

Search Engine Watch's Chris Boggs recently stated that SEO was a "very useful tactic" in driving up a firm's rankings.
