Despite substantial growth and media coverage, fewer people are either contributing to or using Twitter than originally thought, it has been revealed, which may have an effect on businesses tweeting as part of a social media marketing campaign.
The new Tweet Grade by security application manufacturer Purewire has found that many of Twitter's users have not used the service since the day they signed up.
Furthermore, a quarter of users have no followers to their updates.
After compiling profile data from seven million users, the Tweet Grade revealed that more than a third of users have not posted one tweet, while 80 per cent have posted less than ten.
And 40 per cent have not demonstrated any Twitter activity since they first opened their account.
Twitter is now taking steps to prevent people from starting up profiles by claiming to be someone else, which could be said to boost trust in the brand.
The Twitter blog notes that the firm will be experimenting with verifying accounts over the summer.
