Making a site social media-friendly

Websites today need to be search engine optimisation (SEO) and social media-friendly, one sector commentator has advised.

Writing on the TopRank Online Marketing Blog, Lee Odden said there were "numerous" websites which were losing revenue because their SEO was performing poorly.

Such sites miss out on attracting new and also repeat customers, he added.

Mr Odden went on to state: "Making a website social media-friendly will facilitate the saving and sharing of content with others, extending reach and facilitating engagement."

Internet users discovered links to websites through their own social networks by following links from sites such as Twitter and Facebook, he explained.

Links occurring as the outcome of social media participation could, in turn, influence search visibility and provide positive signals to search engines.

Mr Odden concluded that SEO was the most "efficient and effective" way to let consumers discover content.

Businesses focusing on Twitter in their social media marketing campaigns may be interested to hear that, according to Harvard Business, the top ten per cent of the most prolific Twitter users account for over 90 per cent of tweets.
