Despite continuing to lead in the search engine market, Google has admitted that social media marketing such as Facebook poses a threat to its dominance, reports suggest.
Google Group product manager Ken Tokusei claimed that when it came to searching for advice, some users did not trust the typical list of links that search engines provide, instead preferring to use recommendations from friends.
"We haven't gotten to the point where results are seen as if they come from someone you know," he stated.
Mr Tokusei added that while the search engine has introduced tools that allow users to rate or delete links they deem unrelated to their search, Google still has to do more to gain their trust.
He stated that Google's service would develop by determining what information people were looking for.
Another service which may pose a threat to Google is the new search engine Wolfram Alpha.
The search engine, which was launched this month, answers specific queries, rather than providing a list of related links.
