It is believed that Microsoft will unveil its new search engine upgrade at the approaching D:All Things Digital conference next week, a report claims.
Writing for the event's website, John Paczkowski notes that the search engine is code-named Kumo and is the latest attempt by the software firm to launch a major competitor to continuing search leader Google.
He explains that raising its stakes within the search market is something Microsoft "desperately needs to do", with the latest figures from comScore appearing to reflect this.
The results reveal that Google's share of the market continued to rise in April, from 63.7 per cent to 64.2 per cent, while Microsoft's fell from 8.3 per cent to 8.2 per cent, he states.
Microsoft online services president Kevin Johnson previously noted that the firm had a search brand name problem, while speaking at the SMX Advance conference last year.
Search Engine Land's Danny Sullivan claims that four contenders for the name change from Microsoft Live Search are Kumo, Bing, Hook and Sift, adding that he believes the new brand will be titled Bing.
