Whether an internet user is a high school pupil or a company worker, the use of social media can transform the way people do business and live, one commentator has claimed.
In a post for Search Engine Watch, Erik Qualman states that the rise in popularity of social media means that inferior firms and brands can no longer hide behind large marketing budgets.
"The 30-second commercial is being replaced by the 30-second review, tweet, post, status update, etc. CEOs and CMOs that don't believe the hype may be irrelevant before they realise what hit them," he adds, likening this to an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
Mr Qualman suggests that the winners in the rise of social medial marketing popularity will be the best products and consumers, as good companies would act on any negative feedback they receive.
In related news, Search Engine Watch's Mark Jackson has claimed that the increase in popularity of micro-blogging site Twitter is not yet a threat to the search dominance of Google.
