Twitter traffic reaches 17m in US

Despite being a relatively new feature in the social networking map, US traffic to Twitter has risen four-fold over the last 12 months, taking it to 17 million.

The figures by comScore reveal that it is now a "decidedly mainstream web attraction", despite having a somewhat modest following when it first appeared.

Andrew Lipsman, of comScore, explains that the growth may not have been so significant if it was not for Twitter's army of celebrity users, including Demi Moore, Jonathan Ross, Stephen Fry and Oprah Winfrey.

"Its 17 million US visitors in April represents an 83 per cent gain vs March and a 3,000 per cent gain vs [a] year ago," he said, adding that this was "literally unprecedented growth for a site whose audience already numbers in the millions".

Meanwhile, in Europe Mozilla Firefox, perhaps Microsoft Explorer's main competitor has also been performing well, with the AT Internet Institute noting that Firefox's share of the market climbed from 26.4 per cent in November 2008 to 28.4 per cent in April 2009.
