Online engagement has increased in recent months thanks to social media marketing and video content reshaping the internet, according to new research.
An article for Nielsen Online by Charlie Buchwalter reveals that in the last year alone, users spent more time on social networks than they are on their email.
"One thing is certain: the online medium will continue to outperform other media from an ad revenue and commerce share standpoint as we emerge from the recession," he asserts.
Mr Buchwalter goes on to note that users are increasingly gravitating to the sites which include specialised content and allow them to forge personal relationships - with social networking and video content being the fastest growing categories within online marketing this year.
And the report predicts that the internet's share of total advertising spend is likely to continue growing over the coming months.
With this in mind, it may be unsurprising that research by eiaa has revealed that 70 per cent of advertisers claim that their allocated online ad spend is increasing in 2009.
