There are now many simple ways businesses can boost their online rankings through search engine optimisation (SEO), including using blogs and social media marketing.
However, Search Engine Watch's Mark Jackson notes that it can still be difficult for smaller firms to compete with well-established brands and that one critical point to keep in mind is getting keywords into links.
But he adds that it is also important to give link optimisation initiatives a boost.
"Perhaps you even have more links than other competitors, but they have the 'allinachor' edge on you. Or perhaps you have some links that aren't linking to a live page any longer," Mr Jackson explains.
He recommends using Google Webmaster Tools to ease up the process and that the What GoogleBot Sees report allows companies to see the top 200 phrases that other websites have used when linking to the business's site.
Mr Jackson concludes that people should be talking more about link optimisation.
Search Engine Watch's Ron Jones has also compiled a list of SEO tools which could prove useful to companies, including Yahoo!'s Site Explorer which identifies the top search queries.
