Social media marketing could soon face stricter guidelines being placed on it, after it was reported that the Federal Trade Commission is planning to regulate any online viral marketing that uses social networking sites or blogs.
This will include social networks such as Facebook and MySpace, as well as micro-blogging sites like Twitter.
Currently, brands can loan bloggers their products on the condition that they will comment about them in their posts - which, in turn, can boost search rankings.
However, should the regulations be passed such bloggers could face legal action if their statements prove to be false.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Anthony DiResta, an attorney representing a number of advertising associations, said: "This impacts every industry and almost every single brand in our economy and that trickles down into social media."
Commenting on the news, SEO Book's Peter D said that bloggers who comment on products will have to make sure that the results they speak of are not only achievable but typical.
