Businesses have been advised by one commentator on ways they can optimise their use of social media to their own advantage.
In a post for Search Engine Watch, Carrie Hill follows up her earlier article on Twitter by claiming that finding and participating in local and niche forums can also help firms to become an authority within their own sector.
The first tip is to locate the forums operating within a company's industry and in their local area.
In order to participate in forums without alienating potential customers, Ms Hill explains: "Suggestion is a powerful tool and being very helpful without badmouthing your competitors or constantly expounding the virtues of your own business is an art form."
To achieve this she suggests picking a user name that promotes what the firm does, follow up with any member the company has helped on the forum and avoid badmouthing anyone, even competitors.
In a post for SEOmoz, Randfish notes that businesses may have different aims when it comes to utilising social media marketing, including using it on behalf of the company or its clients, or for employees' own use.
