Has Google created an online industry?

The increase in rankings of a site which specifically rubbishes competitors has led to one expert stating that Google is responsible for the creation of an "entire new industry" - reputation management.

Ripoff Report includes posts about organisations which may be seen as competitors and was founded by Ed Magedson.

In a post for Search Engine Watch, Frank Watson claims that the site makes use of what is tantamount to "extortion search engine optimisation" and that this has been sanctioned by Google.

Organisations which have unfavourable content about them included on the site can pay to have it removed and Mr Watson notes that this has led him to agree that search engine results are "cesspools", particularly as Google had taken no action against the site.

"There are times when common sense should step in. That time is now," he states.

While Google has failed to take action against Ripoff Report, PC World reports that the search engine has recently disabled user uploads and comments on the Korean equivalent of YouTube, following new legislation that requires the real name of a user to be listed along each contribution they make.
