Search goes all a-Twitter

The search engine optimisation (SEO) community is all a-Twitter, according to one expert.

In a blog for Search Engine Watch, Kevin Ryan explains that the site was dubbed the micro-blogging platform of the future upon its launch and that today it could "dispel running erroneous data points about the millions of bloggers out there".

Although there are many bloggers listed online, he notes that many sign up to the service without ever posting anything and that actual activity would always outweigh hypothetical numbers.

With Twitter confirming last week attempts to increase its revenue with the introduction of paid accounts and adverts, Mr Ryan claims that there has to be more to it than people publishing simple updates.

"Popularity isn't determined by backlinking in the traditional SEO sense, but self-designated by the number of retweets and followers," he states.

Should Twitter decide to refer to itself as a search engine rather than a social network in light of this, Mr Ryan says he will welcome it in.

And while small businesses may now be utilising Twitter to boost their social media marketing, Search Engine Watch's Carrie Hill claims that tools such as TweetDeck and EasyTweets could simplify and cut down the time they spend on the site.
