While Microsoft may still have a way to go before it steals Google's crown as the leader of search, the technology giant has asserted in recent weeks that this gives it more freedom to take risks than Google can afford.
Chief executive officer Steve Ballmer was recently quoted by Bloomberg as saying that Microsoft search does not need to be "all things to all people", unlike Google's service.
As a result, the company will now experiment with different web models to make its search more accessible, he added.
However, Mr Ballmer admitted: "I'll tell you the search business has been harder for me and for other senior people to learn than most businesses."
Meanwhile, in a recent paidContent interview with Microsoft Live Search's Mike Nichols, the new general manager claimed that a typical user would not notice the differences in the search results generated by either Google, Microsoft or Yahoo!.
He added that Microsoft was in a better position to get inventive, as Google suffers from "innovator's dilemma".
