Is mobile search on the horizon or just a mirage?

The year of mobile marketing and search has been on the horizon for a number of years now but each time has been proved to be a "desert mirage", one commentator has claimed.

In a blog for Search Engine Watch, Michael Boland states that now mobile internet is closer than ever before but the market is still cautious about "bold" claims about mobile search and location-based services.

He adds that changing device standards, such as the popularity of the iPhone, have brought mobile search into the mainstream.

Mr Boland explains that with this, local search indexes higher on mobiles than with desktop computers due to location awareness and portability.

According to research by the Kelsey Group, the fastest growing segment of mobile search will be local - which by 2013 will represent the majority stake of overall mobile search advertising revenues.

"Once it crosses 50 per cent of mobile ad revenues, maybe we can safely say we've reached the year of mobile - or at least the year of local mobile," Mr Boland concludes.

Search Engine Land's Matt McGee also states that many people see mobile internet as a good thing as it allows them to work and play while on the go.
