A recent query on the Google Webmasters help thread has led to debate among two search engine optimisation experts.
One Google user complained that although their site was ranked well by the search engine for a particular keyword phrase, when users followed the link Google did not direct them to the page that was most relevant to the search query.
Google employee JohnMu replied that as long as users were still coming to the site through the search results, the website owner should not worry about what page they were landing on.
He added that the URL should not matter too much as so long as they made it to the website "you've pretty much won the first part".
However, commenting on JohnMu's advice, Search Engine Roundtable's Rusty Brick said relevancy was key and that Google should show the most relevant page in its search.
"Striving for the actual URL is key ... I assume landing on the best page possible would lead to higher conversions. I assume it would also make for a happier searcher," he concluded.
