Getting the most from keywords

Keyword research should not just be about creating a list of phrases that an internet user will employ when they conduct a search, in the opinion of one expert.

In a post for Search Engine Journal, Ann Smarty said that the deeper the topic of keyword research was understood, the richer the content would become and that businesses were likely to achieve more occasional search referrals - those that were not already optimised for.

To achieve this, she advised spending time examining which keywords had the same root, which phrases usually contain the keyword, how the context differs and which words had a similar meaning to each other.

As reader Josh Millrod stated in a comment, keywords research is not simply about traffic and numbers.

In an earlier post for the resource, Mike Tekula stated that while keyword research was often a necessary initial step, "nothing trumps actual data on how users engage with your site".
