Is nofollow dying?

As micro-blogging, such as Twitter, expands on the ever-evolving internet, one expert has predicted that nofollow is dying as a result.
In a blog posting for SEOmoz, Will Critchlow notes that Google lists the three main intended uses of nofollow as being to link to untrusted content, paid links and crawl prioritisation.
However, he states that two big uses of nofollow are now breaking this rule - complete "silo-isation" of large sites and the domain owner not trusting "trusted" content authors' links.
Many site owners may now be imitating the success of Wikipedia by making all outbound links nofollow, Mr Critchlow notes of his first theory.
He adds that he believes that webmasters need to acknowledge that some nofollow links should be followed.
"In the interests of finding the best content for their searchers, search engines are increasingly going to have to use their own algorithmic judgment to disregard some nofollows and include those links in their link graph," he explains.
However, for businesses, is Twitter a new best friend or a "white elephant"?
