Is the web better when it is social?
Well, Google certainly think so and has launched its 80th official blog as a result - the Social Web Blog.
In addition, the search engine group is developing tools that will make any application, any friends and any site "a reality", after noting that currently people will have friends on more than one site, applications that only work in one network and multiple passwords and usernames.
Product marketing manager for Google Friend Connect Mendel Chuang said: "Whether you own a site and want to add social features to increase community engagement, or you're developing a great social application, this blog is for you."
However, while Google is touting the value of social media, one blogger has claimed that while it is powerful, it is not as powerful as search.
SEOmoz's Randfish said that while social media is being labelled the next big thing, it has been around since the dawn of the internet.
He advised that rather than utilising social media because it had a lot of press coverage, businesses should only go after a new channel if it had value and a set of tactics that fitted with an overall marketing strategy.
