There are strategies still being used to boost search engine optimisation (SEO) which could be "cleaned up" by Google taking action, it has been claimed.
In a post for Blog Storm, Patrick Altoft argues that he expected the first thing Google could fix, but as yet had not, was the use of link spam and network of sites to get the highest rankings for keywords.
He claimed that some SEO companies used spam tactics to promote their clients and links to achieve even higher rankings.
However, Mr Altoft suggested that if Google began to ban such "dodgy" firms then the SEO industry would clean up in a matter of a few months, as few clients would hire the services of a company that had been banned by the search engine.
While Google may not have yet taken this course of action, last year it did announced it would be expanding its SEO capabilities.
Chris Lake, writing on the online blog e-consultancy, explained that the search engine now uses Optical Character Recognition technology to search through the content in PDF files, rarely used previously in search ranking results.
