Don't fall at the first spike

Businesses concentrating on creating unique content to increase their search engine optimisation have been urged to remember to make sure their websites can cope with any spikes in web traffic.
Ben Camm-Jones, news editor at Web-User Magazine, said that when peaks are very high, site performance was likely to suffer if the owner had not taken the time to invest in enough server capacity to deal with it.
However, he added that because this was a rare trend, there was little incentive to invest.
"Anyone running a business would be well advised to make sure their site can cope with spikes in traffic, as any potential customers who can't access the site are likely to go elsewhere," Mr Camm-Jones stated.
And web traffic may well be increasing to individual sites, after Hitwise data revealed that there was a 10.4 per cent increase in UK home-based internet activity on February 2nd 2009.
This was largely put down to an increase in people working from home due to the extreme winter weather conditions.
