The chief executive officer of Google has hinted that the search engine company will be placing a further focus on developing semantic search this year, which could allow businesses to re-examine their search engine optimisation campaigns.
Google Watch's Clint Boulton reports that the announcement was made following Google's posting of its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2008 - in which search query results were strong and revenue increased.
Eric Schmidt said: "Wouldn't it be nice if Google understood the meaning of your phrase rather than just the words that are in that phrase? We have a lot of discoveries in that area that are going to roll out in the next little while."
In addition, he commented that the organisation produced more relevant ads against more queries and that this equalled return on investment which equated to increased revenue.
Semantic search is a process which gathers data from semantic networks to disambiguate queries and web text and so generate more relevant results.
