The key to effective search engine optimisation (SEO) cannot be found in black hat "technical trickery" as its future lies with user interaction.
Peter D, in a post for SEO Book, explains that he often receives queries as to what all the variables are in Google's ranking algorithm and if there are any ways around them.
However, he states that no quick-fix formulas exist and while there are quirks in the algorithms that can be exploited, these are difficult.
For example, one black hat technique is to hack an established domain and place money pages on it but, as Mr D asserts, this should be seen as an admission that such trickery does not work or is too time consuming.
Speaking of the growth of social media activity as an effect on ranking, the expert says: "The crawler model is failing because the crawler was designed for structured text, not multimedia.
"The search engines will need to look for other ways of finding and making sense of data."
Meanwhile, following this week's news that Google had removed its iPhone version of iGoogle, the search engine has now confirmed it will not be bringing it back.
