The Twitter question

Businesses interested in website statistics may be keen to know that Yahoo's relationship with Twitter has been questioned.

In a blog for Search Engine Land, Danny Sullivan, commenting on the subject of the new TweetNews - a news search engine from Twitter which uses Yahoo's BOSS system - asked why Yahoo! had not simply built such a service itself.

He explained that Twitter breaks news "far ahead" of any other online source.

However, Mr Sullivan added: "I think it’s a missed opportunity for both Google and Yahoo!. And for Yahoo! in particular."

This was because, while Google was closing down some on its own search projects, "Yahoo! should still be building its own unique and valuable search tools - not depending so much on others to do it", he concluded.

Meanwhile, Search Engine Roundtable's Rusty Brick has stated that he is surprised not to have seen more comment on the recent announcement that Yahoo! is to shut down Content Match in some non-US nations, including the UK.

He speculated whether this could spell the end of the Yahoo! Publisher Network, as it commits its focus to sponsored search and display business.
