Following the crowd

Traditionally the job of designing a website to better increase search engine rankings through search engine optimisation has fallen into the hands of one individual and their ideas.

However, Andrew Gomez, associate product marketing manager at Google, explained that with the Google Website Optimizer, the thousands of visitors to these online pages can now have an input and "produce results that really matter".

Following Google's Website Workout contest last year to see which Adwords advertisers wanted an extreme makeover, four candidates were paired with consultants to carry out the renovations.

Mr Gomez, writing on the Google blog, noted that simply by changing the layout of a page, one firm was able to increase the number of products they sold by 20 per cent.

He added that the Google Website Optimizer allows the creation of multiple versions of a web page by using traffic data and advanced statistical formulas to calculate what makes the site the most useful.

Meanwhile, Google's Michael Gray has recently warned that there may be a reporting tool for people to use should they feel a site is using social media spam.

However, Search Engine Roundtable reader Daniel The Poet said Google was "meddling in other people's affairs".
