According to one sector commentator, social media such as online business networking will be big in 2009 as people rely on these relationships to get through their jobs.
Martin Warner, chief executive officer and co-founder of Talkbiznow.com, said that there was fundamentally an adoption issue between networking face-to-face and enabling a tool like the internet to aid in this.
There is a lot of room for using an internet platform in order to help facilitate business relationships and providing people with tools that enable them to engage in these associations, he added.
"Many forms of business networking have a highly functional reason to be on the internet - to be in a place for the market today," Mr Warner explained.
According to a recent survey by BT Tradespace, 15 per cent of companies are now promoted on social networking sites compared to just seven per cent at the beginning of 2008.
Furthermore, it was revealed that the majority of firms are aware of the benefits of online marketing, but just 52 per cent have a company website and 22 per cent do no marketing at all.
