One sector commentator has questioned whether Google was right to issue a warning to businesses that involve their sites in schemes that see content being artificially promoted to the top of social media services.
Google's Michael Gray claimed that in the future, there may be a reporting tool for people to use should they feel a site is using social media spam.
However, in a response to the comment, Search Engine Roundtable's Rusty Brick noted that social media and search engine optimisation went very well together but that this could get abused.
He questioned whether Google was right to warn against these techniques and whether they were a cause of worry.
Responding to his query, reader Daniel The Poet said Google was "meddling in other people's affairs".
He added that he knew some website owners who had been penalised by Google in the past and had made up for the loss of organic search traffic by heavily promoting their sites using social media.
"I give kudos to anyone who works hard enough to pull it off," he explained.
Meanwhile, Search Engine Journal's Brian Carter has said that pay per click has experienced strong growth as an advertising channel due to high return on investment.
