The key to effectively utilising social media sites as part of a search engine optimisation (SEO) campaign is doing it right, according to one sector commentator.
Ann Smarty, writing on the online pages of Search Engine Journal, explains that by just spamming, businesses and brands will get links from the sites but it is also important that they contribute and investigate social media.
To aid this, she claims that social networking websites can be divided into two groupings - social bookmarking and social voting sites.
With the former, Ms Smarty advises that companies pick the relevant and popular tags to use by examining similar stories and that they keep in mind that Google may not be able to index users.
Meanwhile, in the case of the latter she notes that firms should make a connection with a power user and comment on other people's stories and content, while keeping their own up-to-date.
Elsewhere, Tony Adam has claimed that businesses that publish blogs which have been created with social media content in mind should also include appropriate links to internal and external sources within their posts.
