Social media - just do it

Social media is a people-based phenomenon built by internet users for internet users to share - and brands and businesses which want to utilise these individuals need to be aware of this, one sector commentator has claimed.

However, writing on the online pages of e-consultancy, Karl Havard said that any firms which have not yet tapped into this resource should take the chance to do it now.

The first step businesses should take, he recommended, was identifying what social media best attracted a company's client base where they would be likely to discuss the brand in question.

After observing and monitoring any conversations a business should endeavour to offer something to these social media users that is of value.

In addition, Mr Harvard claimed that any groups or web pages set up on these sites should be engaging, usable and fun.

Firms should also endeavour to be social and should attempt to forget about return on investment, he added.

"There is no single best practice approach, that would be like creating a best practice for making friends and influencing people," Mr Harvard concluded.

Meanwhile, Search Engine Journal's Dev Basu has claimed that some search engine optimisation trends may be unique to the Christmas period.
