Making the cut

Small businesses may wish to use web analytics to calculate the amount of content they need to host on their websites.

Thomas Herbert, product manager at Hostway, said that when it comes to video content, such firms must be "very selective" over the things that they do.

He explained that this meant not hosting video clips of every stock they sell but just using this technique for their top five products - something which may increase a website's search engine optimisation.

"You should narrow it down according to how many people are going to be accessing your website and how optimum it's going to be, then just look at the technologies on how you are going to build your website," Mr Herbert noted.

And he added that if high quality content was not a necessity, companies should consider either low quality content or provide an alternative, such as the option to download.

According to The Deloitte Christmas Survey 2008, there is an increase in the number of people planning to buy some gifts online this Christmas - up to 50 per cent.
