The worst mistake a business or individual website owner can make is to ask visitors to come and look at it in order to assess it, according to one sector commentator, as this is akin to asking someone "do I look fat?".
Kim Krause Berg, writing on the online pages of Search Engine Land, said that rather than requesting this type of feedback, companies should assign tasks for their users in order to receive honest answers.
One question that could be asked is for website users to explain what they believe the site is about so that the owner can ensure that the content is being communicated effectively.
"The biggest mistake is to believe that website appearance matters the most. How it looks is only one part of the process. How it performs is another," Ms Berg noted.
She added that what the website could give back to its visitors and how it conveyed that information mattered far more.
Meanwhile, Search Engine Watch's Tim Ash has stated that a stark landing page can prove to be more effective in search engine optimisation.
