One of the greatest search engine optimisation (SEO) mistakes that may ever have occurred is the tendency to forget about the end-user, one sector commentator has claimed.
Rebecca Appleton, writing on the online pages of Search Marketing Standard, said that this happened when marketers concentrated more on tailoring their content towards the search engine spiders; something she claimed could have "far-reaching implications".
She explained that a site that had been built specifically to garner better rankings may well flourish initially, but in the long term it would lose out.
Ms Appleton noted that the goal of SEO was to increase a website's visibility to users searching for a particular product or service.
"It's always baffling to find sites that immediately lose any advantage gained [through SEO] by presenting their visitor with a site that hasn't actually been designed for them at all," she stated.
To counter this, Ms Appleton suggested that a website should focus primarily on the target demographic.
Meanwhile, Search Engine Guide's Stoney deGeyter said that the problems with a website needed to be identified before an SEO campaign could move forward.
