The growth in popularity of online marketing allows small and medium-sized businesses to "punch above their weight", according to one sector commentator.
Businesses looking to develop their search engine optimisation funding may be interested to know that Tink Taylor, the business development director of dotMailer, said that viral marketing tactics - such as forwarding content to a friend or posting it on a social networking links in an email - can build a pool of new target recipients from an existing audience.
"The growth of social media also allows businesses to build their brands and develop market share in ways that just aren't possible or effective offline," he added.
A report by the Internet Advertising Bureau revealed that the online advertising market was worth nearly £1.7 billion for January to June 2008.
Meanwhile, the Constant Contact Annual Small Business Holiday Survey found that small businesses tend to use a mix of marketing methods, but the majority (60 per cent) say they rely on email marketing most for the festive season.
