Charity search engine falls in Google rankings

The charity search engine Everyclick.com has been placed at number 60 in Google's search rankings, it has been noted.

Will Critchlow, who writes the Distilled blog, speculated that there was no real reason for this lowly posting and claimed that it may simply be because it is a search engine and therefore a competitor.

In light of this, Graham Charlton, writing on the online pages of e-consultancy, contacted managing director of Everyclick.com Polly Gowers to discuss the matter.

"We have over 260,000 pages indexed and we have seen a drop in position across all keywords. Our highest drop appears to be for our website name. For other keywords we have fallen to about number 40," she explained.

Ms Gowers added that the firm believed this was because the site contained some duplicate content and claimed that it had now been resubmitted to Google for consideration.

While Mr Charlton conceded that the penalty seemed "harsh", he warned that it highlighted how vital taking care of search engine optimisation was, as breaking the rules was not "worth the risk".

Elsewhere, SEOmoz's Randfish has noted that user posted duplicate content can jeopardise rankings.
