One sector commentator has urged search engines to carefully monitor the results that make up the ranking pages for search engine optimisation (SEO).
Randfish, writing on the online SEOmoz blog, said that without doing this, firms are treating the symptoms of manipulated search rankings rather than "curing the disease".
He added that black and white hat SEO techniques should not be encouraged or rewarded by the search engine companies.
Randfish commented that because such methods do still garner higher results, it causes problems for firms that work hard to provide quality content which will attract links naturally, in the traditional SEO way.
"After ten plus years in the game - to find Google, the leader in this arena - giving site links on results like these just doesn't sit well with me and it shouldn't sit well with anyone else who employs best practices in white hat SEO," he concluded.
In an earlier post, Phillip Lensses, cited on the online pages of the Axandra, said spam techniques used to increase rankings are familiar to search engines and Google is able to completely remove a website from search results if this is discovered.
